ALFRED MARSHALSEY OF CUCHAR SENTENCED FOR HISTORIC SCHOOLGIRL SEX ABUSE
In October 2008, a man from Cupar was sentenced to over five years in prison for historic sexual abuse against a schoolgirl from three decades earlier.Alfred Marshalsey, a 61-year-old Royal Mail lorry driver residing at 2 Easthall Farm Cottages, was convicted of two charges of indecency committed against a young girl during the 1970s.
He appeared at the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday, where he received a sentence of five years and three months.
The presiding judge, Lord Kinclaven, condemned Marshalsey's actions, describing them as "shameful behavior towards a young and vulnerable girl." He noted that if Marshalsey had not entered a guilty plea, his sentence would have been seven years.
During the court proceedings, advocate depute Graeme Jessop revealed details of the abuse.
According to Jessop, the victim was around 11 or 12 years old at the time.
She was surprised when Marshalsey, who was babysitting at a house in Fife, behaved inappropriately.
After she had taken a bath and was drying herself by the fire, Marshalsey snatched her towel, touched her chest, and told her, "We'll keep doing this.
We'll make you into a big girl." The court also heard that on another occasion, Marshalsey’s conduct was notably more aggressive.
Many years later, the woman, now 42, approached police to report the abuse she had endured.
Jessop quoted her as saying she was "not wanting to be seen as a victim anymore." The victim has struggled with bulimia and experiences flashbacks related to Marshalsey's abuse.
Her marriage subsequently ended, and she required psychological counseling.
Jessop explained, "She has progressed, is stronger and prepared to face the accused in court, believing it will help her move on with her life." As part of his sentencing, Marshalsey's name has been added to the sex offenders' register, and the court took measures to prevent him from working with children in the future.
