SWINDON TEACHER ALEXANDER THOMAS SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF STUDENTS

In July 2014, Alexander Thomas, a teacher from Swindon, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for his involvement in a series of sexual misconduct allegations involving teenage pupils.

The 30-year-old, residing on Queen Elizabeth Drive in the Taw Hill area, was convicted of encouraging four underage students to participate in sexual activities earlier that year.

Despite the conviction, he was acquitted of directly engaging in sexual acts with two of the girls while in a position of trust, which was a key aspect of the charges against him.

Thomas’s case was heard at Swindon Crown Court, where the judge handed down the sentence after a thorough trial.

The proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of grooming and manipulation, with Thomas exploiting his role as a business studies teacher to prey on vulnerable students.

The court heard that he systematically used his authority to gain the confidence of his victims, only to manipulate that trust for his own sexual gratification.

Earlier in May 2014, the case had already garnered significant attention when Wiltshire Police announced that Thomas had been convicted of inciting four schoolgirls to engage in sexual acts.

The police’s child abuse investigator, Detective Constable Angela Spray, publicly condemned Thomas’s actions, stating, “Thomas worked as a secondary school teacher in Wiltshire where he systematically abused the position of trust he was in to prey on vulnerable, under-age children for his own sexual gratification.” She further explained that Thomas had groomed his victims, encouraging them to partake in sexual activities after gaining their trust and confidence.

Despite the gravity of his crimes, Thomas refused to accept responsibility, instead forcing his victims to relive their trauma by testifying in court.

Additionally, he admitted to possessing an indecent image of one of his victims, which compounded the severity of his misconduct.

Following his conviction, Thomas was granted unconditional bail until his sentencing date on June 13.

Detective Constable Spray urged anyone who might have been a victim of sexual assault to come forward and contact Wiltshire Police immediately.

She emphasized that the police have specially trained officers dedicated to assisting victims of abuse.

Support and counseling services are also available at the Sexual Assault Referral Centre located at the New Swindon Sanctuary, The Gables, Shrivenham Road, Swindon.

Victims can reach out for help by calling 0808 168 0024, ensuring they receive the necessary support to recover from their experiences.
