ALEXANDER STAFFORD CAUGHT IN SUNDERLAND BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS AT TESCO

In September 2019, Alexander Stafford, a 22-year-old student from Sunderland, found himself at the center of a serious online grooming incident that culminated in his arrest and subsequent court proceedings.

Stafford, who was studying at Sunderland University, believed he was communicating with a 15-year-old boy named Richard on the popular dating app Grindr.

Unbeknownst to him, the profile he was chatting with had been fabricated by a vigilant group known as Guardians of the North, who specialize in exposing potential offenders.

Within just three hours of initiating contact, Stafford had arranged to meet the individual at a local Tesco store in Sunderland, intending to engage in sexual activity.

The meeting was set up quickly after their initial online conversation, highlighting the impulsive nature of his intentions.

When Stafford arrived at the designated location, he was confronted by members of the paedophile hunter group, who had been monitoring the situation.

The police were also called to the scene, and Stafford was promptly arrested.

During police interviews, Stafford expressed uncertainty about whether he posed a genuine risk to children, revealing a level of confusion and vulnerability.

Prosecutor Paul Cleasby noted that Stafford had expressed gratitude to the vigilante group for preventing him from committing a serious sexual offence.

In a video recording of the confrontation, Stafford was heard saying that his mother would be furious if she found out about his actions.

Following his arrest, Stafford immediately sought professional help to address his underlying issues.

He pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.

The court was informed that Stafford had started chatting with the fake profile on a Sunday morning in September, and within a mere three hours, he had arranged to meet the supposed minor.

This rapid progression underscored the impulsiveness and seriousness of his intentions.

Judge Amanda Rippon, presiding over the case at Newcastle Crown Court, decided to adjourn sentencing in April to allow Stafford the opportunity to undergo treatment.

Stafford, who at the time resided on Portobello Lane in Sunderland, was then living with his family in Cyprus.

The court heard that since his arrest, Stafford had engaged in a treatment program with a psychiatrist in Cyprus, which produced a very encouraging report.

Based on this progress, the judge sentenced him to nine months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and ordered him to register as a sex offender for ten years in the UK.

In her remarks, Judge Rippon emphasized the gravity of Stafford’s actions, stating, “You should not underestimate how serious it is to make contact with what you think is a 15-year-old boy and arrange to meet him for sexual activity.

It will not be tolerated in this country or in these courts.” She further highlighted the damage caused by early and abusive sexual encounters, which she sees daily in her courtroom.

Despite the seriousness of the offence, the judge acknowledged Stafford’s youth and vulnerability, noting that he had come to the UK to study and had struggled to adapt, which contributed to his offending behavior.

Judge Rippon praised Stafford’s conduct since his arrest, particularly his gratitude expressed during police interviews for the intervention of the vigilante group.

She also pointed out that Stafford had started communicating with the fake profile on a Sunday morning, and the attempt to meet the minor was made within three hours of their first contact.

The court was told that Stafford had no prior criminal record and that he was due to return to Cyprus, where he lives with his mother, after the court proceedings.

The judge deferred sentencing for five months to give Stafford the chance to find a psychiatrist in Cyprus who could establish a treatment plan as part of his rehabilitation.

She also mandated that Stafford must sign the sex offenders register before leaving the UK.

Her final remarks underscored her intent to manage the risk Stafford posed through support and treatment, warning that she would not hesitate to impose prison if necessary.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online grooming and the importance of vigilant intervention to protect vulnerable children.
