ALEXANDER MCEWAN FROM GLASGOW SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AFTER DECADES-LONG SILENCE
In a case that spanned over four decades, a man from Glasgow, Alexander McEwan, was finally brought to justice for a series of heinous child sex offences committed against a young girl in the 1960s.The victim, now 54 years old, endured a prolonged period of abuse starting when she was just eight years old, with McEwan targeting her during her childhood before relocating to Lancashire in later years.
McEwan, who is 62 years old, was identified and confronted after he attempted to re-establish contact with the victim’s family through the social networking site Friends Reunited.
This unexpected attempt at communication prompted the victim’s sister to advise her to report the matter to the police, leading to a cross-border investigation involving authorities from both Glasgow and Lancashire.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, recounted the traumatic experiences she endured at the hands of McEwan.
She revealed, “He was 17 when he started abusing me in 1964.
I had just turned eight when it started and it went on until I was about 12.” Her account detailed a catalogue of degrading acts inflicted over those years, which she described as a devastating assault on her innocence and well-being.
She expressed her shock and disbelief at McEwan’s attempt to reconnect after all these years.
“I couldn’t believe that after what he did to me all those years ago he would try and get back in touch,” she said.
Her brother, who resides in London, noticed McEwan’s efforts to contact the family and alerted her, which ultimately led to police involvement.
During the trial at the High Court in Glasgow, McEwan admitted to four child sex offences.
As a result, he was sentenced to a period of probation and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for three years.
The victim shared the profound impact the abuse had on her life, stating, “He destroyed my trust in men.” She also revealed the lasting scars—both physical and mental—that the abuse left behind.
“I couldn’t even speak about it until he got back in touch,” she admitted.
“My arms are covered in scars from where I cut myself.
And I still have the mental scars from what he did to me.
I’ve been in and out of hospital, and I thought I would take the secret to my grave, but I’m so glad I went to the police and he has been convicted.” Her message to other victims was clear and heartfelt: “The longer you leave it, the less chance there is of a conviction.
People who do what he did need to be brought to justice and pay for their crimes.” The case underscores the importance of speaking out against abuse, regardless of how much time has passed, and highlights the courage of survivors who choose to seek justice after decades of silence.
