ALEXANDER LAMONT SHOCKS LANARKSHIRE WITH SEXUAL MISCONDUCT INVOLVING STUDENT

In May 2023, a disturbing case emerged involving Alexander Lamont, a former teacher from Lanarkshire, who has been officially removed from the teaching register following serious allegations of inappropriate conduct towards a student. The incident took place at a secondary school in South Lanarkshire, where Lamont was employed as a teacher during the period from August 2018 to February 2019.

Over the course of these months, more than fifty separate incidents were reported and subsequently proven by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). These incidents involved Lamont engaging in a pattern of inappropriate behavior towards a pupil, identified only as Pupil A, whose mother was also a colleague of Lamont at the school. The misconduct began when Pupil A volunteered to assist as a teaching assistant in August 2018, marking the start of a troubling series of events.

By September 2018, concerns about the teacher-student relationship surfaced when a fellow student, a S2 pupil, suggested that it would be inappropriate for Lamont and Pupil A to develop a romantic connection. Lamont responded to this concern by stating, “there isn’t that much of an age gap between us and Pupil A is very mature for her age,” a remark that indicated his inappropriate attitude towards the student.

As the situation escalated, Lamont took steps to deepen his involvement with Pupil A by sharing his personal email address and sending her increasingly inappropriate messages. Among these messages was a remark implying a blurred line of legality and morality: “I’m implying that I can’t remember if you said you’re 17 or 18…but you’re still an innocent wee thing regardless.” He instructed her to delete the emails and added her on Snapchat, requesting her to keep their contact secret from others.

Further complicating the case, Lamont emailed Pupil A, saying, “Jesus I am SO deleting these emails after tonight, maybe I like frustrating you. And maybe I’ll tell you if you promise to delete the emails after too so we don’t get in trouble, 18 or not this sort of conversation is definitely against the rules.” This message revealed his awareness of the inappropriate nature of his actions. He then proceeded to send sexually explicit messages via Snapchat, including a disturbing comment about making her “scream daddy,” and shared indecent photographs and a video of himself engaging in a sex act. Lamont also asked her to send explicit images in return.

His misconduct extended beyond messaging platforms; Lamont added Pupil A on the dating app Bumble, where he sent her unsettling messages such as “not long now till you’re a big girl.” When the pupil expressed her discomfort and raised concerns about being used, Lamont responded dismissively with, “not f*****g this again.”

In February 2019, Lamont sent an email from his personal account to Pupil A, claiming, “I didn’t see you as a pupil, I saw you as my TA,” attempting to justify his actions. He further warned her that no one would believe her if she spoke out about their relationship, asking, “how would your mum feel if she found out about her perfect little princess?”

Following these revelations, South Lanarkshire Council launched an investigation into Lamont’s conduct. A formal hearing was conducted by the GTCS, during which statements from the school’s head teacher and the head of the English department at the time confirmed they had no prior knowledge of Lamont’s inappropriate behavior. The head teacher expressed concern that the pupil felt used as a “sex object” and feared Lamont might act similarly with other students.

Although a police investigation was initiated, it was ultimately discontinued due to insufficient evidence to proceed with criminal charges. Nevertheless, Lamont’s professional standing has been severely affected; he has been removed from the teaching register and is barred from reapplying for teaching credentials for a period of two years, effectively ending his teaching career in Scotland for the foreseeable future.
