FIFE MAN JAILED FOR DOMESTIC ASSAULT AFTER PUSHING PARTNER DOWN STAIRS
A man from Fife convicted of domestic abuse, which involved physically assaulting his partner and forcing her down a staircase to the point of unconsciousness, has received a jail term of 20 months.Alexander Fyffe was responsible for the attack during a dispute at a residence in Glenrothes earlier this year.
The 44-year-old attended Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court via video link from prison, where he admitted to a domestic-related assault causing injury.
According to the charge, Fyffe repeatedly struck his partner in the head and body and pushed her down a staircase, resulting in her losing consciousness.
Initially, Fyffe faced a more severe charge alleging he endangered her life by striking her multiple times with a baseball bat, but prosecutors withdrew those allegations.
During proceedings, fiscal depute Sarah Smith explained that Fyffe, who had been in a long-term relationship with the woman, assaulted her by punching her in the face, grabbing her, and forcing her down six to eight steps.
She was then at the bottom of the stairs when Fyffe continued to hit her while she was on the ground.
The victim remembered the force of the punches, the pain, and her pleas for him to stop, at one point kicking at his genitals.
Fyffe contacted emergency services after the incident, falsely claiming she tripped over a jacket and fell down the stairs.
Both individuals involved sustained injuries requiring hospital treatment.
Evidence indicated the woman lost consciousness during the attack and was assessed by a doctor, prompting an ambulance to be dispatched.
She disclosed her injuries—bruised eyes and a small cut on her hand—only once she was in the ambulance.
Police officers arrived at the scene and attempted to arrest Fyffe, who resisted, ingested tablets, and doused himself with that flammable liquid.
Initially taken for medical checks, Fyffe was later detained by police.
He denied the events, stating it “did not happen the way she said.” The court noted Fyffe’s prior convictions involving domestic violence.
Defense solicitor Iain McCafferty mentioned that both Fyffe and the victim had been using cocaine in the days leading up to the incident, and described the altercation as a scuffle where Fyffe was pushed back after leaving the stairs.
Expressing regret over the event, the lawyer characterized it as an incident Fyffe deeply regrets.
Sheriff David Hall, citing Fyffe’s criminal history, sentenced him to 20 months’ imprisonment, to run consecutively with his existing sentence, and imposed a three-year ban on contact with the victim.
