ALEXANDER BURNS FROM GLASGOW CAUGHT IN US AFTER CRIME IN SOUTH WALES
In a significant development in a long-standing criminal case, Alexander Burns, a 49-year-old man originally from Glasgow, has been apprehended in the United States following a series of investigative efforts linked to a serious sexual assault in South Wales.The case gained widespread attention after Burns was identified through a televised appeal on BBC One's Crimewatch, which broadcast his image to the public in hopes of locating him.
Burns was connected to the assault that took place in the Afan Valley area near Port Talbot in 2005.
According to court records, he had established contact with a woman from the region via an internet chat room.
During their online interactions, Burns falsely claimed to be in his 30s, which was part of his attempt to conceal his true identity.
The relationship progressed, and during his second visit to her home, Burns committed a sexual assault, raping the woman in her residence.
The Swansea Crown Court heard that Burns's actions did not end there.
After the attack, he failed to respond to bail conditions at Neath Police Station and subsequently fled the country to evade justice.
His departure was confirmed when border police in the United States arrested him in Montana, where he was found after his face was broadcast on national television.
This arrest marked a crucial breakthrough in the case, leading to his extradition back to the United Kingdom.
Since his return, Burns has been held in custody for a total of 262 days.
He faced trial at Swansea Crown Court, where he denied the charges of raping the woman at her home on October 31, 2005.
Despite his denial, a jury found him guilty of the crime during an earlier trial.
The court proceedings revealed that Burns had met his victim online shortly before the assault, which played a significant role in establishing the timeline of events.
Burns's criminal history also includes an earlier arrest in the Newcastle area in 2006.
