PAISLEY CHILD SEX PREDATOR ALEX O’NEILL CAUGHT BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS IN SCOTLAND
In December 2018, a disturbing case unfolded in Paisley involving a man accused of grooming a young girl for sexual purposes.The individual, identified as Alex O’Neill, aged 29, was apprehended after a covert operation carried out by a group known as Wolf Pack Hunters UK.
This group, composed of volunteers dedicated to exposing online predators, successfully identified and confronted O’Neill at his student accommodation in Paisley.
According to court proceedings, O’Neill was caught after he engaged in a series of sexually explicit exchanges with a person he believed to be a 12-year-old girl.
Unbeknownst to him, the girl was actually a member of Wolf Pack Hunters UK, who had created a fake profile under the alias Amy.
The group’s member, a 47-year-old woman, had set up the profile in January with the explicit purpose of luring online groomers.
She used the social media platform Tagged, which is popular for meeting and chatting, to initiate contact with O’Neill.
The court heard that the conversation between O’Neill and the decoy quickly turned inappropriate.
On February 13, the exchanges became sexual in nature.
Amy asked O’Neill, “How are you?” to which he responded that he was “in my boxer shorts” and “wearing nothing,” adding that he was touching himself because “it felt good.” The court was told that during their WhatsApp chat, O’Neill wrote to the decoy, “Maybe I will show you in person sometime,” indicating his intentions to meet.
Further messages revealed O’Neill’s attempts to persuade the decoy to touch herself, claiming she would feel a “sensation” and that it would “feel good.” The decoy expressed that she had “never done that before, not at my age,” to which O’Neill responded that “most people do it when they are older,” implying he was encouraging her to engage in sexual acts.
He also boasted about having his hands down his trousers during the conversation.
Members of Wolf Pack Hunters UK, including the decoy posing as Amy, arrived at O’Neill’s student flat in Paisley to confront him about his grooming behavior.
The group’s intervention was captured and streamed live on Facebook.
Upon being confronted, O’Neill immediately apologized.
The operation culminated with police officers arriving to arrest him, ending the sting.
O’Neill appeared before Paisley Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to a charge of causing humiliation, distress, and alarm to a person he believed to be under 13, between February 21 and March 17.
He admitted to sending multiple messages of a sexual and indecent nature via WhatsApp, with the intent of sexual gratification.
Sheriff Frances McCartney decided to defer sentencing for six weeks to allow for a Criminal Justice Social Work Report and a report from the Pathways Project, which specializes in working with sex offenders in Renfrewshire.
She also ordered that O’Neill be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register and granted him bail.
The case will be revisited on January 23, when the court will determine his final sentence.
