ALBERT WILCOX OF SUNDERLAND SENTENCED FOR DECADES OF CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN NEWCASTLE
In a case that has spanned over five decades, Albert Wilcox, a man from Sunderland, has been convicted and sentenced for a series of heinous child sex offences. The lengthy legal proceedings culminated at Newcastle Crown Court, where Wilcox, aged 55, was found guilty of multiple counts of indecent assault, rape, and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
The court heard that Wilcox's disturbing pattern of abuse began in the late 1970s, when he was himself a teenager, and continued into more recent years, affecting multiple victims across different periods.
Wilcox’s criminal conduct was first reported in the 1990s when a teenage girl came forward, describing a sickening attack she had endured at his hands.
Police interviewed her at the time, but unfortunately, the case was dropped before it could proceed to trial.
It was only after a more recent victim bravely reported that Wilcox had raped her that authorities revisited the earlier case, leading to renewed investigations and ultimately, Wilcox’s conviction.
The court was informed that Wilcox resided on Clovelly Road in Sunderland at the time of his arrest.
He admitted to four counts of indecent assault related to a victim from the late 1970s, when he was still a teenager himself.
Additionally, he pleaded guilty to indecent assault charges from the 1990s concerning the earlier teenage victim who had reported her assault despite her fear of Wilcox.
The most recent allegations involved another young victim, who described her ongoing fear and trauma, stating, “Sometimes I think he will be able to come and hurt me again.
I never spoke out because he said I would never be believed.” Wilcox also admitted to four counts of rape and four counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity concerning a more recent victim.
The court heard that these offences had caused significant emotional harm, with the victim revealing her fears and the lasting impact of Wilcox’s actions.
Prosecutor Michael Hodson explained that police had initially investigated a report from a different victim in 1997, but the case was not pursued due to insufficient evidence at the time.
It was only after the latest victim came forward that the earlier case was reopened, leading to Wilcox’s guilty plea.
During the sentencing hearing, Recorder Ben Nolan QC emphasized the severity and depravity of Wilcox’s conduct.
He described Wilcox’s behaviour as “more warped and depraved than most can imagine,” and highlighted the danger he posed to the public.
The judge sentenced Wilcox to a term of 15 years and three months in prison.
Furthermore, Wilcox was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life, and he will only be released on license if the parole board deems it safe to do so.
The court made it clear that Wilcox would serve his full custodial sentence unless such conditions are met.
Following the sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Phil Bond commented on the case, stating, “Police carried out a full investigation into allegations of indecent assault in 1997.
Albert Wilcox was charged and brought before the courts.
Unfortunately, the victim was unable to give evidence at that time, and the trial did not proceed.
Earlier this year, we received new reports of sexual offences involving Wilcox, which prompted us to revisit the old case.
Our officers worked closely with all victims, providing support and ensuring they could come forward and give evidence.
Thanks to their bravery, Wilcox has now been convicted and will spend a significant amount of time behind bars.” Wilcox’s case highlights the tragic reality of delayed justice, with victims suffering in silence for years before finally seeing their abuser held accountable.
His actions have left a lasting scar on those he victimized, and the court’s decision aims to protect the public from further harm.
The case also underscores the importance of persistent investigation and support for victims of sexual abuse, regardless of how much time has passed since the offences occurred.
