ALAN WOOD FROM HARTLEPOOL CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Hartlepool community, Alan Wood, a 62-year-old former youth hostel caretaker, was found to possess and view indecent images of children, leading to a serious legal confrontation at Teesside Crown Court.Wood’s arrest was prompted by police investigations that uncovered his disturbing online activities.
According to prosecutors, Wood admitted to officers that he would frequently search for such images, typically two to three times a week.
The police first became aware of his involvement in June of the previous year, and a search warrant was executed at his residence in Hartlepool on September 2.
However, at the time, Wood was not residing at his registered address.
Further investigation revealed a forwarding address in Thirsk, and on September 7, Wood voluntarily appeared at a police station, where he handed over a mobile phone and a laptop.
These devices were later found to contain a collection of indecent images of children, including movies and photographs classified at the most serious level of indecency, along with other images falling into less severe categories.
During the court proceedings, Wood, who had no prior criminal record, expressed remorse.
When Judge Peter Armstrong addressed him, emphasizing the gravity of the offense, Wood responded from the dock, “I didn’t realise it, but I do now.” Prosecutor Rachel Masters highlighted the severity of the case, stating that the possession of such images supports the sexual abuse of real children and fuels demand for such material.
The judge underscored the importance of recognizing the harm caused, telling Wood that courts treat internet child pornography as a serious offense because it involves real victims.
In light of his guilty plea to three charges of possessing indecent images of children, Wood was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years.
The court also ordered him to participate in a treatment program and complete 35 days of rehabilitation activities.
Additionally, Wood was subjected to a 10-year Internet use restriction through a sexual harm prevention order, mandated to register as a sex offender for the same period, and prohibited from working with children in any capacity.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable victims from further harm, with the community of Hartlepool now grappling with the implications of this disturbing revelation.
