ALAN WILSON FROM DURHAM SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST YOUNG GIRL
A man in his sixties, Alan Wilson, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after committing a series of heinous sexual offences against a young girl in Durham.The disturbing incidents took place over a span of several days last year, during which Wilson engaged in multiple acts of sexual misconduct, some of which he recorded on video, causing significant concern among the authorities and the community.
Durham Crown Court heard that Wilson, aged 63 and residing on Hatfield Road in Newton Aycliffe, had previously maintained a good character, which made the revelations even more shocking.
Despite his prior reputation, assessments indicated that Wilson posed a high risk of causing harm to children, although the risk to other individuals was considered lower.
The case came to light after Wilson was arrested and charged with a total of 19 counts related to his actions.
During a plea hearing held in October, Wilson admitted to all charges listed in the indictment.
These charges included nine counts of sexual assault, seven counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, two counts of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and one count of possessing indecent images of a child.
The images in question were classified as 13 in the second most serious category, B, and three in the less severe category, C.
Following his plea, Wilson was granted bail under strict conditions, including a prohibition on any contact with children, pending his sentencing.
The court later reconvened in the week commencing January 6 to determine his fate, after a background report prepared by the Probation Service was reviewed.
Representing Wilson, Robin Turton acknowledged that his client recognized the wrongfulness of his actions.
However, he questioned the assessment that Wilson posed a high risk of harm to children, suggesting that the lengthy prison sentence would provide an opportunity for rehabilitation.
Turton emphasized that none of the offences were sustained over a long period, but rather occurred over a few days, describing the pattern as concerning.
Recorder Dafydd Enoch KC responded sharply, describing the offences as “utterly despicable” and “a worse example of such conduct.” He pointed out that Wilson’s sexual attraction to children was evident and expressed profound concern over the nature of the crimes.
During the sentencing, the judge highlighted the gravity of Wilson’s actions, especially given his age and previously good character.
Recorder Enoch stated that it was deeply troubling that Wilson had allowed himself to succumb to systematic grooming and sexual assault of a young girl.
He noted that, although there was no psychiatric assessment of the victim, it was clear she would likely suffer psychological consequences from the abuse, even if she did not fully understand what was happening at the time.
Wilson was sentenced to a total of 12 years in prison, with a requirement that he serve at least two-thirds of that sentence before being eligible for release on licence.
Additionally, he was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a lifelong restraining order preventing any contact or approach towards the victim.
The court also imposed indefinite notification requirements, mandating Wilson’s registration as a sex offender, to ensure ongoing monitoring and protection of the community.
These measures reflect the severity of the offences and the court’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals from potential harm in the future.
