ALAN SAUNDERS FROM STAFFORD SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN IN STAFFORD
In a case that has shocked the Stafford community, Alan Saunders, a man known locally as a lollipop man, was convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses involving young children.The incident, which came to light in February 2012, revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse that spanned several years and involved two victims, one of whom was only five years old at the time of the initial abuse.
Alan Saunders, aged 42 at the time of sentencing, faced a Stafford Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to a total of eight charges.
These included four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, three counts of assaulting a child by penetration, one count of attempted assault of a child by penetration, and two counts of sexual assault.
The court was informed that Saunders had a regular sexual relationship with one of the victims, a schoolgirl, when she was under the age of 16.
Prosecutor Peter Cooper detailed that this victim became pregnant as a result of Saunders' actions and subsequently underwent an abortion when she reached 16.
The court also heard that the second victim was significantly younger, with Saunders beginning his abuse when she was just five years old.
The severity and duration of the abuse were emphasized during the proceedings, highlighting the profound impact on the victims.
Judge Nirmal Shant QC described Saunders as a dangerous offender, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes.
The court sentenced him to five and a half years in prison, with the understanding that he would only be released once he was no longer considered a threat to the public.
Additionally, Saunders was subjected to an indefinite sexual offences prevention order and was mandated to remain on the sex offenders' register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community.
It was noted that Saunders had been released from custody in April 2018, but the details of his release and subsequent actions remain part of ongoing community safety considerations.
