ALAN ROTHWELL SENTENCED FOR SHOCKING ATTACK IN HEATON'S RISING SUN COUNTRY PARK

In July 2022, a disturbing incident unfolded at the Rising Sun Country Park in North Tyneside, where a woman was subjected to a brutal and terrifying assault during broad daylight. The perpetrator, Alan Rothwell, a 34-year-old man residing on Mowbray Street in Heaton, Newcastle, was eventually apprehended and sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his heinous crimes.

Rothwell was convicted of multiple serious charges, including sexual assault, attempted rape, kidnapping, and robbery. The court heard that the attack took place in the expansive 400-acre area of the park, a location where the victim, a 63-year-old woman, was simply enjoying a walk when she was suddenly ambushed.

The prosecution detailed how Rothwell had grabbed the woman from behind with force, causing her to strike him with significant strength in an attempt to defend herself. According to court reports, Rothwell held her so tightly that she was unable to breathe, illustrating the severity of his grip. Despite her efforts to fight back—kicking, scratching, and attempting to nip him—his physical strength overpowered her.

Evidence presented in court revealed that DNA evidence linked Rothwell to the scene. His genetic material was found beneath the woman’s fingernails, and investigators also discovered discarded latex gloves at the scene, which contained his DNA. These pieces of evidence played a crucial role in establishing his involvement.

During the trial, the victim delivered a heartfelt statement, which was read aloud by Judge Robert Spragg. She described her ordeal as terrifying and humiliating, emphasizing her feelings of vulnerability and fear following the attack. She stated, “To be attacked, robbed, and sexually assaulted by a person who had clearly set out that day to harm someone was terrifying and humiliating. I can’t refer to this person as a man, as he behaved like an animal.” She also acknowledged her physical recovery but expressed ongoing emotional distress, noting that she now feels nervous and vulnerable when alone.

The court was told that Rothwell had stolen her phone and £5 during the assault, adding a robbery element to his crimes. Northumbria Police launched an extensive investigation, which included thorough searches of the vast parkland. The police also examined CCTV footage, which tracked Rothwell’s movements in the days leading up to the attack. The investigation received an overwhelming response from the public, with over 100 tips within the first 24 hours, aiding authorities in building their case.

Judge Spragg sentenced Rothwell to 14 years and nine months in prison. He stated that the attack was “absolutely terrifying for her and any woman’s worst nightmare,” and praised her bravery in resisting her attacker and helping bring him to justice. Rothwell is expected to serve nearly nine years before being eligible for release on license, after which he will be under supervision. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Heaton and the wider North Tyneside area, highlighting the importance of vigilance and swift law enforcement response in safeguarding public safety.
