ALAN JONES FROM CHILTON FACES PRISON AFTER SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING CHILDREN IN COUNTY DURHAM
In a serious development at Durham Crown Court, Alan Jones, a 69-year-old resident of Chilton, has been informed that he should prepare for a prison sentence following his guilty plea to multiple sexual offences involving a minor. The charges against Jones include two counts of inciting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity, as well as one count of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 13.Jones, a retired factory worker, appeared before the court via video link from custody to admit to these historic offences, which took place between March 2006 and March 2007. His appearance marked a significant moment in the ongoing legal proceedings, as he chose to plead guilty rather than contest the charges.
The case was temporarily adjourned to allow the victim to prepare and deliver a statement, which the court will hear prior to the sentencing. This step underscores the court’s commitment to ensuring that the victim’s voice is heard before any final judgment is made.
Jones, who had initially pleaded not guilty at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court, is scheduled for sentencing on December 13. The judge presiding over the case, Christopher Prince, emphasized the importance of the victim’s statement and confirmed that Jones would face a custodial sentence. Additionally, the court ordered that Jones be entered onto the sex offenders register from today, reflecting the severity of the offences.
Representing Jones, Ian West informed the court that his client has a clean record, with no prior convictions, and is of previous good character. Despite this, the court’s decision indicates the gravity of the crimes committed and the legal system’s stance on protecting minors from such offences.
