ALAN GREENWOOD FROM BARWELL CONVICTED OF CHILD INDECENCY CHARGES IN EARL SHILTON
In a significant legal development, Alan Greenwood, a long-standing member of the Earl Shilton Town Council, has been found guilty of serious criminal charges involving the creation of indecent images of children. The conviction was reached after a three-day trial held at Leicester Crown Court, where Greenwood, aged 74 and residing on Kerry Close in Barwell, faced allegations that he had engaged in the production of illicit material involving minors.Greenwood, who has served as a councillor representing the Church Ward in Earl Shilton, denied two counts of making indecent images of children as well as a charge of intending to encourage the commission of an offence. Despite his denial, the jury returned a verdict of guilt on all counts, leading to a series of legal consequences.
As part of his sentencing, Greenwood received a nine-month custodial sentence, which was suspended for two years. This means that he will not serve time in prison unless he commits another offence within that period. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his activities during that time.
Furthermore, Greenwood’s electronic devices, including all phones, were seized by authorities as part of the investigation. He was also mandated to pay prosecution costs amounting to £1,000 and a victim surcharge of £140, reflecting the court’s stance on compensating for the harm caused.
Following the verdict, the clerk to Earl Shilton Town Council, Mark Jackson, issued a statement confirming that Greenwood would be stripped of his council office, subject to any appeal process. The council’s decision underscores the gravity of the charges and the community’s response to such allegations.
In his official statement, Mark Jackson conveyed the council’s position: “Earl Shilton Town Council was informed this morning (December 21) that Town Councillor Alan Douglas Greenwood, the elected member for Church Ward, Earl Shilton, has been found guilty of serious criminal charges after a three-day trial at Leicester Crown Court. He was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, suspended for two years, placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years, all phones seized, and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £1,000 along with a victim surcharge of £140.”
