ALAN EDGECOURT FROM GREAT RISSINGTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE AND KENT
In March 2016, a disturbing case unfolded involving Alan Edgecombe, a 64-year-old man from Great Rissington, who was convicted of heinous child sex offenses after being caught in an undercover police operation. The investigation revealed a deeply depraved pattern of behavior, with Edgecombe actively seeking to engage in sexual abuse of young children through online communications.Edgecombe, a father of one, had a long-standing history of possessing indecent images of children, with a total of 8,143 such images found on his computer. His criminal activities extended beyond mere possession, as he also boasted about trips to Thailand where he claimed to have 'fun' with young girls, and he attached indecent images to emails sent to undercover officers. His online interactions began on March 17 of the previous year, when he started communicating with a woman using the username 'mummieslittlegems,' who was posing as a mother. From the outset, Edgecombe used his real name and signed his emails with the phrase 'Alan xx,' indicating a disturbing familiarity and intent.
During these exchanges, Edgecombe revealed a disturbing 20-year 'predilection' for young girls and expressed a desire to find 'open-minded, liberal' women who shared his twisted interests. His conversations quickly turned explicit, with him describing his sexual fantasies involving children, including a desire to 'rape a child to death' and continue abusing her afterward. Prosecutors detailed how he attempted to cultivate the interest of the woman in abusing her children, specifically mentioning her six-year-old daughter and nine-year-old son, Sam and Tom. He expressed a particular interest in her 'virgin daughter' and even bought sex toys from Lovehoney to take with him during his planned visits.
Edgecombe had made concrete plans to travel from his home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, to Canterbury, Kent, to carry out these sickening acts. He detailed his intentions to meet Kim’s children at their home on two separate occasions. His plans were thwarted when he was involved in a car accident, preventing him from making the first visit. Despite this setback, he arranged a second meeting, demonstrating his unwavering intent. He also communicated with another woman, Claire, with the aim of traveling to her location to engage in sexual activities with her niece, Mia, a seven-year-old girl.
Before he could act on his depraved fantasies, Edgecombe was arrested on April 22 of the previous year by Gloucestershire Police. Following his arrest, officers conducted a thorough search of his home and took him in for questioning. During the police interview, Edgecombe claimed that his conversations were purely 'fantasy chat' and insisted he had no real intention of abusing children. He also stated that he could not remember how the conversations had started and denied being a paedophile, describing such a label as 'abhorrent.' In a bizarre remark, he suggested that paedophiles should be 'hung, drawn and quartered.'
The court heard that Edgecombe’s online communications were filled with sexually explicit content. Prosecutor Andrew MacFarlane highlighted that Edgecombe’s primary aim was to abuse the children he was discussing, with evidence showing he was willing to turn his disturbing fantasies into reality. The emails included detailed descriptions of his preferences, with Edgecombe expressing that his favorite ages ranged from six to twelve. He described the prospect of abusing children as 'exciting' and had ordered sex toys, lubricant, stockings, and underwear from an online retailer, arranging for delivery near Kim’s house.
Despite his plans being interrupted by his accident, Edgecombe continued to pursue his sick interests, communicating with Kim and Claire about traveling to their locations to carry out sexual acts with their children. The court was shown evidence of emails where he detailed his desire to rape her 'virgin daughter' and ensure her brother 'didn’t feel left out.'
Following his arrest, Edgecombe claimed that his interactions were merely 'fantasy' and that he had no real intention of harming children. He also stated that he found such acts 'abhorrent' and could not remember how the conversations started. His comments included a controversial remark that paedophiles should be 'hung, drawn and quartered.'
During sentencing, Judge Richard Smith QC described Edgecombe’s emails as 'vile' and 'disturbingly graphic.' He emphasized that the defendant’s plans to turn his fantasies into reality demonstrated a complete lack of regard for the suffering of the children involved. The judge condemned the defendant’s attitude, noting that his claims of merely 'fantasy' were inconsistent with the evidence presented.
Edgecombe’s family, including his long-term partner and sister, who were present in court, expressed support despite the shocking revelations. The judge sentenced him to five and a half years in prison for the child sex offenses. Additional sentences included one year for possessing indecent images, three years for distributing such images, two years for possessing images of children, and six months for possessing images for show. The court also commended the efforts of the specially-trained covert officers from Kent Police, whose diligent work was instrumental in bringing Edgecombe to justice.
