STUDENT JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN UNIVERSITY HALLS

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… A university undergraduate who raped a fellow student as she slept has been sentenced to 16 years in prison following an investigation by West Midlands Police.Akiel Flemming, who was studying at the University of Wolverhampton, sexually assaulted a woman in her halls of residence on Stafford Street in the early hours of 1 October last year.
The victim woke at 5 am to find Flemming, from Albert Avenue in Manchester, engaging in sexual activity with her.
He then fled but shortly afterward committed similar acts on two other 19-year-old students, entering their rooms and assaulting them.Flemming was arrested the same day on campus and charged with rape, sexual assault, and trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence.
He denied the charges, claiming the sexual contact was consensual and that he was welcomed into the rooms.Despite his claims, a jury found him guilty of the offences.
At Wolverhampton Crown Court on June 23, Flemming was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment.
Additionally, he is required to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.
The court’s judge, Patrick Thomas QC, expressed that Flemming presents a significant risk to the public.Authorities and supporters welcome the lengthy sentence, hoping it provides some closure and justice for the victims and their families.
The judge highlighted the seriousness of his actions, noting that Flemming prowled the corridors of the multi-occupancy accommodation during Fresher’s week and targeted fellow students, with all three offences occurring on the same morning.
The victims have been profoundly affected, and their studies were interrupted.
