Rochdale Rapist
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Rochdale, three young men have been convicted and sentenced for their involvement in the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl, an incident that was further compounded by the fact that the attack was captured on a mobile phone. The case was heard at Bolton Crown Court, where the details of the assault and the subsequent legal proceedings were thoroughly presented.

According to court reports, the victim had traveled to an address in Rochdale after receiving a phone call in May 2008. During her visit, she consumed whisky, which left her incapacitated and vulnerable. It was during this period that the three men—Ajmal Afridi, aged 19, of Boundary Street; Imtiaz Syed, aged 20, of Ellesmere Street; and Tayyab Hussain, aged 19, of Henry Street—committed the heinous acts. All three admitted to the charges of rape during the court proceedings.

Ajmal Afridi was sentenced to six years in a young offenders institute. The court heard that Afridi had raped the girl twice and also sexually assaulted her on other occasions. Imtiaz Syed received the same sentence, having admitted to one count of rape and one count of incident assault. Tayyab Hussain, who has learning difficulties, was ordered to serve three years after pleading guilty to a single count of rape.

The court was also informed that the victim’s mother, in a state of panic, called her daughter’s phone. The call was answered by the three men, with faint sounds of her voice audible in the background, which added to the distress of the case. Judge William Morris noted that there was no evidence suggesting the girl was forced to drink alcohol or that she was lured to the house intentionally.

In a statement read out in court, the girl expressed her feelings of violation and low self-esteem, stating, “I feel violated, my self-esteem is low. This has had a devastating effect on my family.” The emotional impact of the crime was evident, and the court acknowledged the trauma inflicted upon her.

Legal representatives for the accused argued that all three men regretted their actions. However, the severity of their crimes was underscored by the police, with Det Con Charles Stewart of Greater Manchester Police describing the offenders as “these three animals” who subjected the victim to an “appalling and demeaning crime.”

In addition to the three main defendants, two others involved in the incident faced sentencing in October. Mustafa Arshad, aged 17, was sentenced to eight months in a young offenders institute after admitting to taking two photographs of the abuse on his mobile phone and aiding and abetting the sexual assault. Mohammed Usman Raja, aged 21, received a six-month sentence after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice by providing a false alibi for Syed.

This case has left a lasting scar on the Rochdale community, highlighting the importance of justice and the ongoing fight against such heinous crimes.
