AIDAN COWMAN CAUGHT IN CHESHIRE INTERNET PAEDOPHILE SCANDAL
A 66-year-old man from Cheshire, Aidan Cowman, was caught in a disturbing online sting that revealed his involvement in serious criminal activities related to child exploitation.The incident unfolded after police officers, operating undercover, initiated contact with Cowman through a covert account on a popular chat platform.
The officers had set up the account, posing as a 13-year-old boy, to lure potential offenders into revealing their intentions.
On January 11 of the previous year, Cowman initiated a conversation on the 'gay chatroom' Chat Avenue.
His opening message was shockingly explicit, stating: "Hi, want to phone daddy while we both w***?" He further disclosed personal details, claiming, "I'm 64, married.
Irish, but living near Liverpool." Despite being informed that the supposed teenager was at school, Cowman continued the perverted dialogue, asking, "Are you playing with your c**k now?" Subsequently, on January 16, Cowman added the undercover account on Snapchat.
When questioned by officers whether he was the same individual from Chat Avenue, he confirmed his identity and admitted to being "sat at home playing with his c**k." He also remarked on the age difference, acknowledging it was significant, but expressed interest in exchanging explicit pictures and videos, asking, "are you interested in doing some?" Following these disturbing exchanges, authorities executed a search warrant at Cowman's residence on April 14.
During the raid, he was arrested and responded to officers' questions by saying, "I just got carried away on the internet." The police recovered a small bag of cannabis and electronic devices from his property.
A subsequent investigation revealed that Cowman had stored numerous indecent images on his phones, including 52 images classified as Category A, which depict the most severe forms of abuse.
Additionally, 12 Category B images and 101 Category C images were found, some showing children as young as two being subjected to sexual assault.
During police interviews, Cowman admitted responsibility for the messages and acknowledged possessing the indecent images.
His defense attorney, Kyra Badman, explained that his relationship with his partner had become strained since his online activities were uncovered.
Although they remain together, they are currently living separately.
Badman emphasized Cowman's remorse, stating, "He is extremely grateful for her support." In court, Cowman pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempted sexual communication with a child, possession of indecent images, three counts of making indecent images, and possession of cannabis.
The judge, Recorder Peter Wright KC, sentenced him to 18 months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
The judge acknowledged Cowman's previous convictions, which were from many years prior, but emphasized the gravity of his current offenses.
He described the indecent images as involving the "abuse and defilement of children" and condemned the conduct as "despicable." Recorder Wright highlighted the disturbing nature of Cowman's actions, noting that he sought to exploit and corrupt a young boy for his own gratification.
Despite Cowman's claims of being in denial about his motivations, the court recognized his willingness to seek help and his stated desire not to reoffend.
As part of his sentence, Cowman was also subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, required to sign the sex offenders' register for ten years, and mandated to complete a rehabilitation program along with up to 35 days of activity aimed at preventing future offending.
