ADEN STEVENTON GROOMED AND SEXUALLY ASSAULTED SCHOOLGIRL IN SWANSEA
In February 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Aden Steventon, a man who preyed on a young girl in Swansea, with the abuse coming to light after the victim confided in school staff. The court heard that Steventon, who had moved to Swansea in 2014 and resided in Powys Avenue, Townhill, had engaged in a prolonged period of grooming before committing sexual assault.
According to court proceedings, Steventon, a 31-year-old landscape gardener, took advantage of the girl by giving her alcohol he had brewed himself at home.
This grooming process involved gradually building trust and manipulating the young victim, who later described him as “really gropey.” The abuse was not an isolated incident; police investigations revealed that Steventon had also supplied alcohol to another teenage girl, raising further concerns about his conduct.
The abuse was uncovered when the girl disclosed her experiences to staff at her Swansea school.
Her revelations prompted immediate concern and action, leading to police involvement.
The police responded swiftly, arresting Steventon in Swansea city centre on March 17 of the previous year.
During a subsequent search of his room at the Dolphin Hotel, officers discovered bottles of lubricant and sex toys, which added to the evidence against him.
Further investigation revealed the extent of Steventon’s misconduct.
The police found that he had been grooming the victim over an extended period, gradually escalating to sexual assault.
The young girl, in her impact statement read aloud in court, expressed feelings of being “dirty” and described suffering from nightmares and panic attacks.
She voiced her fears about her future and expressed a sense that “everything is ruined” due to the trauma she endured.
Steventon, who was residing at Walsgrave Road, Ball Hill, Coventry, had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault when he appeared in court for sentencing.
His solicitor, Robin Rouch, acknowledged that Steventon recognized the wrongfulness of his actions and expressed remorse.
The defendant was also seeking help for his alcohol problem, including attending Alcoholics Anonymous sessions.
Judge Paul Thomas QC addressed Steventon directly, stating that he had “groomed his victim slowly and determinedly” before assaulting her.
In recognition of his guilty plea, the judge applied a 25% reduction in sentencing.
Ultimately, Steventon was sentenced to four years in prison.
The court also ordered that he serve half of this sentence in custody, with the remaining period to be served on licence under the UK government’s early release scheme.
Additionally, Steventon was made a registered sex offender for life and was subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
