ADAM GRUTER CAUGHT IN LONDON PAEDOPHILE STING NEAR KFC ON YARM ROAD
A man named Adam Gruter, who traveled from London, was caught in a disturbing online sting operation conducted by paedophile hunters. The operation was set up to catch individuals attempting to meet minors for sexual purposes.
In this case, Gruter had arranged to meet a 14-year-old girl at a KFC restaurant located on Yarm Road in Darlington, with the apparent intention of engaging in sexual activity.
Members of the Child Online Safety Team, posing as the teenage girl, had been communicating with Gruter over several days.
During their online exchanges, the conversation took a sexual turn, and Gruter sent an indecent photograph of himself to the decoy.
The court heard that the defendant had been messaging the girl via WhatsApp after initially befriending her on Facebook.
Emma Atkinson, the prosecutor, detailed how Gruter inquired about her virginity and bra size, and requested images of her, during the period between October 9 and October 20 of the previous year.
Despite the decoy repeatedly informing him that she was only 14 and living in the Newton Aycliffe area, Gruter’s behavior did not change.
The court was told that he continued to pursue the meeting, claiming he had booked a room at Bannatyne’s Hotel and that they would meet at the KFC on Yarm Road in Darlington.
When the paedophile hunters confronted him at the designated meeting spot, he was immediately detained, and the police were called to arrest him.
The court proceedings revealed that Gruter, aged 43 and residing at Elm Park Gardens in London, pleaded guilty to charges of inciting or causing a child to engage in sexual activity and attempting to meet a child following grooming efforts.
During the hearing, Robert Mochrie, representing Gruter, explained that his client was not in Darlington specifically to meet the girl but was working for a wine delivery company that required him to travel across the country.
He acknowledged that the behavior was troubling and that the court might consider an immediate custodial sentence.
Judge Timothy Stead sentenced Gruter to 20 months in prison for both offences.
The judge emphasized that Gruter’s actions demonstrated a clear intention to carry out a sexual meeting, evidenced by his booking of a hotel room.
Additionally, Gruter was ordered to be subject to a ten-year sexual harm prevention order and must register as a sex offender for the same duration, reflecting the seriousness of his conduct and the potential risk posed to the public.
