UBER DRIVER JAILED FOR RAPE

A man who raped a passenger at knifepoint has received a 16-year prison sentence, thanks to the prompt reporting of the victim.

Police managed to find and detain Adam Daley just one hour after the assault occurred in December last year, following the victim’s immediate contact with law enforcement.

This quick report allowed authorities to swiftly investigate, identify Daley’s vehicle, and monitor its movements through CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.

It also helped preserve crucial forensic and digital evidence.

The evidence obtained was instrumental in securing Daley’s conviction.

After a trial held last month, he was convicted of one count of rape, one of sexual assault, possession of a bladed article, and making threats to kill.

On Friday (July 10), at Leicester Crown Court, the 33-year-old resident of Chester Close, Leicester, was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Additionally, he was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and a restraining order banning contact with the victim.

During sentencing, Daley also pleaded guilty to two counts of producing child sexual abuse images evidence uncovered during a mobile phone examination.

Specialist detectives from the force’s rape and serious sexual assault team are now urging anyone else who may have been targeted by Daley to come forward.

The assault was reported around 5:30 a.m.

on Monday, 29 December.

The attack occurred in the back of Daley’s white Toyota Auris in a layby near Soar Valley Way.

The victim, a woman in her twenties, and her friend were outside a Leicester city centre bar ready to order an Uber when Daley pulled up and offered to give them both a ride home via the app.

After dropping her friend off, Daley and the woman continued on to her address.

During the ride, Daley made sexual comments and asked inappropriate questions.

As they exited the city, Daley pulled over, claiming he needed the bathroom, then ordered the woman into the front seat and forced her to perform oral sex at knifepoint.

During the incident, he also removed her top and touched her breasts.

The woman pleaded with Daley to stop, after which he left her at the layby and drove away.

She immediately dialed 999, leading police to be dispatched.

Quick investigations identified Daley’s vehicle registration and confirmed he was the insured driver.

Officers from the Roads Policing Team stopped Daley at Vaughan Way and Great Central Street at 6:37 a.m.

While attempting to arrest him, Daley tried to seize his phone and stomp on it, in an effort to destroy evidence.

His mobile device was later analyzed along with CCTV footage and forensic samples, revealing his movements before and after the attack.

Despite DNA evidence linking him to the assault, Daley denied the charges, claiming the victim’s DNA was transferred to him after she drank from a water bottle in the car, which he allegedly used to wash himself afterward.

Further examination of his phone showed Daley had driven past the layby three times after the assault.

Detective Constable Matt Smith, from the rape team, praised the victim’s bravery and quick response, which enabled authorities to act swiftly and secure evidence.

He emphasized the importance of reporting such incidents, noting Daley’s role as an Uber driver could suggest potential additional victims.

Daley also refused to cooperate with drug testing upon arrest; subsequent blood tests confirmed cocaine use.

He later admitted to drug-driving and was sentenced in April to a 20-month driving ban, a £200 fine, and ordered to pay costs and surcharges.
