STOCKPORT MAN JAILED FOR LIFE IN BRUTAL WIFE MURDER
A man who strangled his wife before wrapping her body up in a duvet "similar to how an undertaker would" has been jailed for life.Rukshana Miah, 35, died after being attacked by Abul Kashem Miah during a row at her home in Stockport, Greater Manchester, in August last year.
Manchester Crown Court heard she had written diary notes detailing her abuse at the hands of Miah.
Miah, 37, of Florist Street, Shaw Heath, was found guilty of murder.
The court heard he had run up credit card bills in his wife's name.
Mrs Miah, who was a teacher at Broadoak Primary School in Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside, was found with serious injuries after Miah called emergency services in the early hours of 18 August, 2014.
He claimed he had put his arm over her mouth to prevent her shouting as they wrestled on the floor, Greater Manchester Police said.
An officer who attended said Mrs Miah was found in a position similar to how an undertaker would wrap a body.
She remained in hospital in a coma until her death on 23 August.
A post-mortem examination revealed her injuries included ligature marks around her neck, consistent with being strangled.
Miah was sentenced to life in prison for her murder and told he would serve a minimum of 15 years.
After the sentencing, Det Chf Insp Howard Millington said: "It is clear from everyone we have spoken to that the victim was a popular member of society and was much-loved.
Her death has devastated everyone who knew her.
Our thoughts are particularly with her family.
In cases like this, only two people really know what happened on that fateful day but it is clear from the severe injuries she sustained that Miah's claim he merely tried to stop her from shouting was nothing more than a pack of lies to cover up his guilt."
