ABDULAHI MOHAMUD AND SHOCKING KIDNAPPING AND RAPE IN SURREY AND LONDON
Abdulahi Mohamud, aged 38 and residing in Surrey, was today sentenced to a total of 14 years in prison, accompanied by an additional two years of extended licence, at Kingston Crown Court. The conviction stems from his involvement in the kidnapping and sexual assault of a vulnerable young woman, acts that have shocked the local community and highlighted the dangers faced by victims of sexual violence.
The incident occurred in the early hours of January 25, 2022, when Mohamud was driving through the Soho area of central London.
During his drive, he noticed a young woman who appeared to be intoxicated and was visibly distressed.
She had become separated from her friends and was lost in the city, semi-conscious and slumped in a doorway.
Recognizing her vulnerable state, Mohamud stopped his vehicle, approached her, and forcibly kidnapped her, placing her into his car against her will.
Once inside his vehicle, Mohamud subjected the young woman to a violent rape.
The assault was carried out in a brutal manner, taking advantage of her incapacitated condition.
After the attack, he abandoned her on a street miles away from the location where he had initially taken her.
Fortunately, a delivery driver who noticed her distress and fear intervened.
The driver assisted her in calling her family and arranged for a taxi to take her home, providing her with some measure of safety and support during a traumatic time.
Law enforcement authorities quickly identified Mohamud as the suspect through the use of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology.
He was arrested on January 28, 2023, nearly a year after the incident.
During police interviews, Mohamud denied the allegations, claiming that the victim had fabricated the story because he refused to drive her home.
He also asserted that any interaction between them was initiated by the victim and that the encounter was consensual.
However, during the trial held on October 26, 2022, the jury saw through his false claims.
Evidence, including CCTV footage, clearly demonstrated that Mohamud had observed the victim in a vulnerable state and exploited her condition to lure her into his car, where he committed the assault.
The jury unanimously convicted him of kidnapping and rape, recognizing the severity of his actions.
Lola Adesiyan, a Senior Crown Prosecutor from the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit in London South, commented on the case: "Mohamud is clearly a very devious and dangerous individual.
This lengthy sentence means that other women are now protected from danger at the hands of this sexual predator." She further explained the impact of the crime: "The ordeal he put the victim through was terrible.
He took advantage of her incapacitation not to assist her but to rape her.
From CCTV evidence, it is obvious that he saw her in a vulnerable condition and used this vulnerability to get her into his car where he carried out a violent attack." Expressing hope for the victim’s recovery, Ms.
Adesiyan added: "It’s thanks to the courage of the victim that we were able to put this dangerous man before a jury who found him guilty.
We were determined to achieve justice for her, and I hope that this sentence will give her some closure following her terrible ordeal." She concluded with a firm statement on the commitment of the Crown Prosecution Service: "The CPS will not hesitate to prosecute cases of rape and serious sexual offences where there is sufficient evidence, ensuring that offenders are brought to justice."
