LABOUR COUNCILLOR ABDUL-MAJID RAHMAN AND ALLEGED CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN PORTHCAWL AND NEWPORT
A former local government representative has been exposed for possessing an alarming collection of over 100 indecent images of children. Abdul-Majid Rahman, aged 34, was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison at Newport Crown Court on Tuesday, May 31, after admitting to charges involving the possession and distribution of illegal imagery. The court proceedings revealed that Rahman, who lives on Marine Terrace in Porthcawl, had engaged in the sharing of these illicit photographs at an address on Corporation Road in Newport. His guilty plea covered multiple serious offences, including the distribution of 12 category A indecent photographs of children — the most grave classification of such images — which took place between November 2020 and May 2021. Additionally, he admitted to sharing a single category B indecent image of a child on March 1, 2021.
Further charges included the possession of a large number of images: 30 images categorized as A, five as B, and 67 as C, spanning various years from 2005 through to 2021. These offences highlight a disturbing pattern of behavior over several years involving the accumulation of illegal content.
Abdul-Majid Rahman was previously a Labour councillor for the Victoria ward on Newport City Council. His term began in 2012 but ended abruptly in October of the previous year when he resigned for personal reasons, a decision confirmed by a council spokesperson at the time. The authorities later conducted a by-election in December to fill the vacant seat.
As part of his criminal sentence, Rahman is mandated to register as a sex offender for life. Moreover, he has been subjected to a sexual harm prevention order for a duration of ten years, which imposes strict restrictions aimed at safeguarding the public from any potential risk he might pose.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and judicial systems to combat the distribution and possession of harmful and illegal material involving minors, and it marks a significant conviction of someone previously involved in local politics from the Porthcawl and Newport areas.
