AARON BURNS JAILLED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND ROBBERY IN MANCHESTER
A man named Aaron Burns has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for a heinous incident involving sexual assault and robbery that took place in Lancaster. The case highlights the serious threat posed by violent offenders and underscores the criminal justice system's efforts to bring such individuals to justice.
The incident occurred early in the morning on November 14, 2019, when Burns, aged 31, targeted a young woman walking home through Lancaster city centre.
At approximately 2am, Burns followed the victim as she made her way through the streets after an evening out.
As she approached her residence, she sensed a presence behind her.
Suddenly, she felt a hand cover her face and another encircle her waist, indicating a terrifying assault was about to unfold.
According to court reports, Burns then threatened the victim by saying, "You're coming with me or I'll murder you." Without warning, he forcibly dragged her onto a canal towpath, an area known for its quiet, secluded nature.
Once there, Burns demanded to know how much money she had and rifled through her handbag, taking her belongings during this distressing ordeal.
The attack escalated further as Burns sexually assaulted the woman, an assault she would remember with horror.
Despite her efforts to resist and her cry for him to leave her alone, Burns continued his assault.
In a disturbing act, he seized her mobile phone and threw it into the adjacent canal, instructing her that she was not allowed to use it.
After the assault, Burns fled the scene, leaving the victim visibly shaken and in need of help.
She managed to seek assistance and contact authorities.
Law enforcement officers from Lancashire Constabulary—including their investigation team—retrieved CCTV footage from the area, which ultimately linked Burns to the crime.
The suspect, who was described as having no fixed address, was quickly identified and arrested based on this evidence.
Burns denied any involvement or wrongdoing during police interrogations.
However, following a trial at Preston Crown Court, he was convicted of multiple charges, including sexual assault, kidnap, and robbery.
The court's judgment led to a severe sentence earlier this month, with Burns being sentenced to ten years of imprisonment.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the judge recognized the danger Burns posed to the community.
He was instructed that he must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
Furthermore, Burns was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure intended to monitor and manage the risk he poses.
Law enforcement officials expressed their condemnation of the crime and their commitment to community safety.
Detective Inspector Dylan Hrynkow from Lancaster CID described the incident as an appalling crime that profoundly affected the victim.
He praised her bravery in reliving the ordeal during the trial and emphasized that Burns committed this act fully aware of his responsibility.
DI Hrynkow reaffirmed the police’s dedication to safeguarding women and girls from violence and sexual offences, stating that instances like this are taken very seriously.
Chief Superintendent Karen Edwards, the Divisional Commander for the West of the county, echoed these sentiments.
She highlighted the diligent work of the investigation team in ensuring Burns was removed from the streets.
She urged victims of sexual offences to come forward, reassuring the public that authorities will listen, believe, and act against perpetrators to maintain safety and justice.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and robust law enforcement efforts in combating violent crimes.
It also sends a clear message that those who commit such despicable acts will face stringent legal consequences.
