SUSSEX POLICE COURT RESULTS: OFFENDER RECEIVES RESTRAINING ORDER
A mother of two has expressed her gratitude towards Sussex Police after her attacker received a ten-year restraining order.Aaron Agate, aged 35 and residing on The Ridgeway in Burgess Hill, was convicted of assault and criminal damage following his trial at Brighton Magistrates’ Court.
During the incident, Agate physically assaulted his victim by strangling and pushing her, and caused damage to her home by punching and kicking walls and doors.
He also threw objects at her.
The assault, which occurred last year, led the victim to report the incident to Sussex Police.
Court proceedings revealed that on 8 November 2025, Agate left their shared residence to watch a football game.
After the match, the victim attempted to contact him but received no response.
Later, at around 1:50 am the next morning, Agate returned home enraged and headed upstairs towards the bedroom where the victim was sleeping.
He tried to remove her engagement ring from her finger, and after she handed it over, he dragged her from the bed by her wrists, shouting at her.
He then assaulted her by punching and kicking holes in the bedroom door, while wiping his bloodied hands on her face.
The victim managed to leave the house and reported the attack to police later that morning.
Agate was arrested on 10 November and charged with assault and criminal damage.
After a guilty verdict, he appeared in court on 14 July, where he was sentenced to a ten-year restraining order, an 18-month community order with a 20-day rehabilitation program, and 180 hours of unpaid work.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay £750 in compensation for damages and distress.
The victim, who was supported by specialist officers and wishes to remain anonymous, said: “I realised that this cycle of abuse was never going to end unless I left.
“From the initial call to the police officers who took my statement, within hours of reporting him, I felt supported and heard, which I had feared would not happen.
“I want to thank the officers for their professionalism and dedication in helping me feel safe to report what happened and share my experience.
“If anyone is in a similar situation, I encourage you to seek help.
If you're not ready to involve the police, there are other organizations that can assist.” PC Eleanor Cowen, overseeing the case, praised the victim for her bravery: “Her strength and courage to come forward throughout the investigation and court proceedings are commendable.
“Agate has been sentenced and is subject to strict conditions, including a ten-year restraining order to prevent contact with the victim.”
